Follow Charleston County Crime Records

Local newsrooms and agency press releases drive most Charleston County crime coverage. The booking and court files live elsewhere, with their official custodians. A story might name the arresting agency or run a supplied photo. That is reporting, not a jail roster. It also is not the last word on a case. Track down the source that created the record first. Then pull the court file to see what happened after the arrest surfaced in the news. Charges listed at booking can shift as a case moves.

Charleston County Crime News Sources

Stories lead the way in Charleston County news. The Post and Courier's Crime & Courts desk, Live 5 News Crime, ABC News 4, and Count on 2 Crime each cover arrests, court proceedings, investigations, and public-safety events as they happen. What they publish depends on editorial judgment. None of it works as a daily booking list or a full picture of police activity. Official records answer different questions. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office posts dated releases and media advisories, though that archive is selective rather than a complete booking log. For the real thing, the CCSO Inmate Search is the adult booking source, and the Charleston County Public Index or the court with jurisdiction handles outcomes. News describes a moment in time. Court files show what came later.

Charleston County Official News and Records

Go to the primary agency source first. Use newsroom reporting for context and attribution. The outlets listed here are real local resources. Only the sheriff's booking and court channels hold records. A photo attached to a single story belongs to that story alone. No newsroom section on this page works as a standing county mugshot gallery.

Outlet or source Charleston County role Photo and record context
Charleston County Sheriff’s Office news releases Official, dated agency releases and public advisories. Selective releases, not a complete booking log. Confirm custody through the inmate portal.
CCSO Inmate Search Official adult current-custody and past-booking lookup. Documented official booking-photo path when the relevant record is available.
Post and Courier Crime & Courts Frequent staff reporting on crime and courts across the county and region. Articles may be subscriber-limited and can use agency, court, scene, or other story images.
Live 5 News Crime Frequently updated broadcast and digital crime reporting for the Lowcountry. Images are story-specific. The agency release or official record remains the primary source.
ABC News 4 Local News Event-driven local reporting, including selected arrest and crime stories. No verified Charleston County mugshot section was identified.
Count on 2 Crime Event-driven regional and county crime coverage. Stories may cite police or sheriff material. It is not a jail feed.

Coverage stretches across Charleston, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and the wider Lowcountry. That reach helps you find a story. But a city name in a headline tells you nothing. You will not learn which detention facility, agency, or court handled the matter. Those details have to come from the official records underneath the report.

Charleston County News Photos and Records

Not every image is the same thing. A booking photo from an agency, a court image, a file photo, a scene shot, and a family-supplied picture each carry different meaning. Newsrooms pick one to illustrate a report. That picture does not convert the story into a roster entry. Nor does its appearance say anything about how a charge turned out. For an adult county booking photo, CCSO's Inmate Search is the official source whenever the booking is available.

One quirk of the CCSO search: the "Show Past Bookings" control splits current custody from earlier bookings. The county also built in a posting delay to shield families from scams. A missing or late result does not mean no arrest happened. Name the agency cited in the story, then go to that agency's portal or file a narrow public-records request. City police reports and detention-center booking records are separate animals.

Record context: A booking photo documents intake identity, and a charge reported anywhere stays just that until the court file shows a disposition.

Charleston County News Is Not a Booking Feed

Charleston County has no separately titled CCSO "today's bookings" page. Nothing is labeled 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, weekly, or rolling either. The agency offers one search form with date filters instead. To look at a specific intake date, fill in the booking-date or arrest-date fields and set your range. If the person may already be released, run the query again with "Show Past Bookings" selected. Remember, this is a search you run yourself, not a live feed with any stated refresh schedule.

The same gap shows up in local reporting. No established Charleston County newspaper runs a daily booking-photo gallery. The Post and Courier, Live 5, and CCSO releases cover reported events well, but they cannot replace the agency record. Charleston Police and North Charleston Police have no identified official adult booking feeds. Mount Pleasant's Crime Reports Map offers incident context, not a custody roster or booking photos.

News often arrives first. Records come later, and a case can bend in new directions after that. For an older booking the official search cannot reach, the CCSO Public Information Office handles FOIA requests as the fallback. Never plug gaps in a booking record with a reporter's description of a source.

From a Charleston County Story to Records

A clean record trail keeps three things in separate lanes. The story is one. The booking event is another. The court case is a third. Pull the date, the person's name, and the agency named in the article first. Then match your request to the custody situation. The countywide booking and records route lays out the full CCSO roster and the past-booking process, including why a current-custody result answers a different question than a past booking does.

  1. Read the story closely for the alleged event date, agency, location, and any case number. Treat those facts as the report’s attribution, not a final judgment.
  2. For an adult county booking, search CCSO’s official Inmate Search by name, booking-date range, arrest-date range, or inmate number. Complete the portal’s reCAPTCHA.
  3. If current custody is not the right state, select “Show Past Bookings.” If a responsive official record is still unavailable, send a focused request to CCSO PIO/FOIA with the person, approximate date, facility, and record sought.
  4. Search the official court record with the correct person and, where known, case number. Review the docket events and disposition rather than treating the booking charge as the end of the matter.

Don't assume the sheriff's office holds everything. A city police report belongs to that city's department, even when the arrest itself lands someone in Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. Two agencies, two records. The report and the booking entry stay separate, and each must be requested from its own custodian. For a closer look at how the city-level split works, the Charleston record path breaks it down.

Charleston County Court Disposition Checks

After a booking, the court file usually comes next. Charleston County runs its main criminal-case lookup through the official Charleston County Public Index. The county's court-information hub branches out from there. It points to Circuit Court Case Search, magistrate-records search, rosters, and other court services. Criminal matters move through General Sessions and Circuit Court. Municipal and magistrate courts keep their own dockets for cases inside their jurisdiction.

Search by case number when you have one. Two people can share a first and last name. Court data also lags, and some files sit behind confidentiality or sealing orders. Even so, the docket is the record that matters. It shows a plea, dismissal, diversion, sentence, appeal, or expungement. A booking entry can note the charge, the bond, and the arresting agency. It answers none of the larger questions.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) search covers a different question entirely. It tracks state-prison custody. That means it is not a Charleston County booking and not a court outcome. Reach for it only once a case has moved into that system.

Court records tell the rest of the story. A booking charge only marks the start of a case. To see where it stands now, look up the official court file, which shows the current status and outcome.

Charleston County Secondary Mugshot Listings

Plenty of sites publish Charleston County-labeled mugshot pages. The main examples are BustedNewspaper, RecentlyBooked, Arrests.org, and Mugshots.zone. None of them is official. Their updates can lag behind the jail portal. A booking may stay posted after the agency record changes. Location labels can simply be wrong.

Treat these listings as leads, not answers. For who is actually in custody, check with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office first. Then track the case through the Public Index or the right court. There is no confirmed Mugshots.com landing page dedicated to Charleston County, so none is offered here. Photos from these publishers are not copied or collected on this site.

One more caution on geography. Charleston and North Charleston sit across county lines. A city tag on a third-party page may not tell you where the booking happened or which agency holds the person. News stories and county-labeled listings can point you in a direction. The agency record still tells you who the custodian is and which court handles the case.
